Baine stared at the gem and tried to contain himself. It wasn’t that Dean was giving him jewelry; materialism wouldn’t cause such a strong reaction. Baine could only equate the feeling running through him to the very seconds after his shackles had been removed. That rush of his magic returning to his body for the first time, his heart pumping and fingers twitching as the magic that made his heart beat and his body move swirled around, trying to erupt from his body.

What Baine knew about dragons he had learned in the very recent weeks since the dragons had flown over the city and rained down fire. They hoarded things, and the only dragon known to have given a piece of his treasure to a human was An’nanyle, who gave much of his treasure to Prince Leon. Dragons only did that for one reason.

“I want you,” Dean said sharply. “You’re beautiful, a perfect complement to any gemstone, and you’re fiery enough to outshine even the most vibrant of my collection.” He unclasped the necklace and reached forward to put it around Baine’s neck. A moment later, he stepped back. The emerald remained behind, glittering brightly on top of Baine’s homespun shirt.

“You can’t!” Baine forced out despite his overexcited magic surging through his lungs. “I can’t,” he added.

“Too late,” Dean whispered back, his fingers reaching out to brush the gemstone before traveling upward to cup Baine’s cheek. Slowly, Dean leaned forward.

Baine felt Dean giving him the time to escape the kiss if he wanted. But the look in Dean’s eyes, the intensity of his gaze, held him motionless.

Their lips touched. Baine’s magic surged immediately toward them, trying to bridge the space between their shared breaths. There were no illusions left for Baine, not with the way his lips were tingling and his breath was heaving. He loved Dean, and Dean returned his feelings with equal passion.

Dean drew away reluctantly. “Come see the rest of my hoard?” he asked, his lips brushing against Baine’s as he spoke.

Baine could only nod.

Dean reached out and took Baine’s hand in his, pulling him to his feet with a gentle tug. Out of the corner of his eye, Baine saw Reese standing with his arm over Laine’s shoulders and Laine smiling happily at Baine, but then Dean guided him out the cabin doorway and into the construction clearing. He barely remembered the walk through the city along a short paved road that led directly to the foot of the mountains. The entrance into the caves was well concealed, but even the most brazen human wouldn’t dare enter without permission.

Dean stayed in human form as they walked through the underground hallways, passing a couple of massive multicolored dragons on the way. They turned at an innocuous doorway, and Baine stepped into a wonderland of shine and sparkle. On every surface was a gemstone or statue. Baine couldn’t turn his head fast enough to see everything that caught his eye as Dean towed him to the very back corner of the oversized cavern.
